Last year, Kyle McCord won the starting quarterback job for the Ohio State Buckeyes and led the team to an 11-1 regular season record and had the team just one score away from a likely College Football Playoff berth. But after the season, it sounds like Ohio State essentially pushed him out of the program and into the transfer portal.
During a recent appearance on the No Destination podcast, Kyle McCord revealed that shortly after the Buckeyes suffered their third-consecutive loss to the Michigan Wolverines and were effectively eliminated from the College Football Playoff, he met with the team. Based on his description of the conversations, it sounds like Ohio State was ready to move on from him as the team’s quarterback, and he transferred as a result.
“So, we didn’t get into the playoff and then we started having quickly conversations of what the future as going to look like,” McCord said. “That’s just the reality of college football now is everything moves so fast with the transfer portal window opening right after the season. So they thought they should move one way and I thought accordingly I should move in another.

“That’s just the reality. It’s the business,” McCord said. “So kind of on short notice, didn’t know where I was going to be when I put my name in the portal, and just kind of see what’s going to happen. Some guys get in the portal and know where they’re going, that really wasn’t the case for me. I really had no idea.”
McCord ultimately signed with the Syracuse Orange where he will presumably be the team’s starting quarterback this season.
