The Kansas City Chiefs have no questions at starting quarterback with Patrick Mahomes leading the way for the team, but the team was in need of a backup quarterback with Blaine Gabbert hitting the free agent market this offseason. But it sounds like they solved that problem by adding a veteran quarterback to the roster this week.
As first reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to bring in Carson Wentz as the new backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes.
“#Chiefs signed Carson Wentz as backup 1-year deal, per sources,” Schultz said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Wentz was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and spent four seasons with the team, even earning Pro Bowl honors in 2017. Since then, he’s spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, the Washington Commanders, and most recently the Los Angeles Chargers.
Even though he won’t be the starter, it’s pretty significant news that he’s signing with the Chiefs, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media as a result.
That almost mvp Wentz season feels like 1500 years ago https://t.co/Pmsrw13aKT

The Chiefs were the only real possible destination for Zach Wilson as a QB2 in 2024.
He’ll be fighting for a roster spot as a QB3 somewhere as was expected. https://t.co/sh9Uq7wabO

Glad they signed him as the backup. Was looking forward to the potential Mahomes-Wentz competition here. https://t.co/RO3fmYlZh0

ALRIGHTY THEN!!!!! My favorite backup QB of the Mahomes era in terms of talent!!
Carson Wentz’s only game of 2023 was Week 18 vs the 49ers with the Rams and he had an 80.8 PFF grade with 3 big time throws on just 24 passes and 0 turnover worthy plays!
That’s pretty good!!! https://t.co/fKMYIlbI36

We’ll have to see how Wentz impacts the Chiefs this year.
