In what could turn out to be an episode of ‘when keeping it real goes wrong’ US Open champion Rory McIlroy decided this week that Twitter isn’t just for making friends. McIlroy engaged in full out warfare with Golf Channel and BBC 5 commentator Jay Townsend.
Townsend started the fight with this to say about the course management from Rory’s caddy at the Irish Open:
McIlroy took exception and wasn’t shy with his opinion of Townsend:
Townsend responded that he stood by his comments and McIlroy ended saying “well I stand by my caddie.”
Interestingly McIlroy has not apologized or removed the tweet from his account. Realistically McIlroy was only saying what every athlete thinks about every commentator who criticizes them. It is yet to be seen if the PGA or McIlroy’s sponsors have anything to say about the spat.
If nothing else this definitely makes McIlroy’s twitter a must follow.
