Former United States President Donald Trump got a bit of a lifeline on Monday that could help him keep his prestigious golf courses for now as a court ruled he must only put up $175 million of a $464 million judgment against him while he appeals. But New York Attorney General Letitia James offered a pretty clear warning to the former president.
Even though Donald Trump will only have to pay $175 million to cover the $464 million judgment while he appeals, James warned the former president that he is “still facing accountability” for the massive fraud he was found to have committed.
“Donald Trump is still facing accountability for his staggering fraud. The court has already found that he engaged in years of fraud to falsely inflate his net worth and unjustly enrich himself, his family, and his organization. The $464 million judgment – plus interest – against Donald Trump and the other defendants still stands.”
Trump was found to have fraudulently inflated the value of his assets – including his prestigious golf courses that have hosted many elite golf events over the years – in order to obtain more favorable loan and insurance terms, allowing him to enrich himself unfairly.
If Trump was unable to come up with the $464 million himself, he was likely going to have to sell some of his assets – including his golf courses around the United States and the world – or risk having them seized by courts.
But this decision will allow Trump to pay a much smaller sum while he appeals the decision.
