The Minnesota Vikings lost veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins this offseason as he decided not to re-sign with the team, instead opting to join the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent. After his departure, the Vikings quickly signed veteran quarterback Sam Darnold to help add depth and experience at the position. And it sounds like he’s ready to compete.
During a press conference this week, Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell were not willing to guarantee that Sam Darnold would definitely be the team’s starting quarterback this upcoming season. But it sounds like he’s ready to do everything he can to earn the role this offseason regardless of who he has to compete against.
“No matter what happens I’m going to compete,” Darnold said during his own press conference according to Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press. “Just excited for the opportunity to do that.”
Darnold acknowledges that there’s a good chance the Vikings decide to bring in another quarterback, either through the NFL Draft or free agency, but he is going to do everything he can to compete and prove that he should be the one leading the offense this upcoming season.
We’ll have to see how it goes.
