The Washington Commanders are returning previous starting quarterback Sam Howell and are widely expected to select a rookie quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, but that didn’t stop them from adding a veteran player they think could help them, too.
According to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Washington Commanders are signing veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota this offseason.
“Former Eagles QB Marcus Mariota is signing with the Washington Commanders on a 1-year deal with a base value of $6 million and upside to $10 million, per source,” Schefter said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mariota has bounced around the league after things didn’t work out with the Tennessee Titans initially. He spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles serving as the backup quarterback to starter Jalen Hurts. The season before that, he was the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons before the team benched him to see what they had in Desmond Ridder late in the season.
Obviously, his signing in Washington led to a lot of reactions given the overflowing quarterbacks room.
