From the outside looking in, it was pretty clear that legendary head coach Bill Belichick and legendary quarterback Tom Brady did not exactly have the best relationship during their final years together with the New England Patriots. And thanks to a recent documentary series, that bad blood has been confirmed.
In AppleTV+’s documentary “The Dynasty: New England Patriots,” it’s revealed that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick did not have the best relationship, with team owner Robert Kraft describing it as “just totally dysfunctional” late in Brady’s career with the team.
“Basically it was a silent relationship,” Kraft said. “Before there had been tension, but now it was just totally dysfunctional … He represented a threat to Bill’s full power. He didn’t want Tommy there.”
Ultimately, Brady chose to leave the team following the 2019 season, instead signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he led them to a Super Bowl championship. And Brady admits that Belichick was a big reason why he left.
“Me and coach Belichick, we did what we loved and competed for 20 years together,” Brady said. “But I wasn’t going to sign another contract (in New England) even if I wanted to play until (I was) 50. Based on how things had gone, I wasn’t going to sign up for more of it.”
They may have had a lot of success together, but the relationship cleary was not always the best.
