Ever since the Denver Broncos chose to bench former starting quarterback Russell Wilson at the end of the season, it’s been very much expected that the team would choose to move on from him during the offseason. The team did not immediately announce their decision and Wilson has since made it clear he wants to return, but it sounds like a decision has been made.
According to a report from NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Denver Broncos “made it very clear” at the NFL Combine this week that the team would be parting ways with Wilson in the very near future.
“The Broncos made it very clear the Russell Wilson chapter will be over soon. Around the league, people believe Denver will cut him by next week,” Russini wrote for The Athletic on Saturday.
Obviously, things did not go according to plan for Wilson or the Broncos after the team acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks before the 2022 NFL season, and now it seems their time together is over.
When the Broncos do make this decision, it will leave the team with an $85 million dead cap charge in 2024, which would represent the largest on one player in league history.
