The Washington Commanders currently have the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and could choose to use it on a quarterback. But while that is an option, it sounds like the team would also be happy to continue with Sam Howell as the starter, too.
While most have assumed that the team would select a quarterback in the draft this year and move on from Howell, Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters had a pretty surprising message about how the team views Sam Howell after his two seasons in the organization, making it clear that the team would be happy to move forward with him, too.
“Certainly [how the Commanders are going to address the position] hasn’t been decided by any stretch of the imagination,” Peters said according to Pro Football Talk. “We still have a lot of work to do. What we’re going to do whether it’s that pick or later, we really like what we have in Sam right now. So we’re really excited about that, too.
“Sam came to the facility a couple of weeks ago and got a chance to hang out. Instead of sitting around, we just took a walk. We took a walk around Commanders Park and around the fields and got to know him a little bit better, so I feel really good about him, too. So we’ve got a lot of different things we can do, but still really excited about him.”
Obviously, the team will do whatever is best in the draft, whether that’s taking a quarterback, selecting someone from a different position, or trading the pick away. But if the Commanders end up riding with Howell yet again, it sounds like they’d be confident in that move.
