It’s certainly been quite a month for Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce. After helping lead his team to a second consecutive Super Bowl championship earlier this month, Kelce picked up quite an impressive individual honor on Sunday night – though he’s not even really sure why he was nominated in the first place.
On Sunday, Travis Kelce was named the Athlete of the Year at the People’s Choice Awards, claiming the honor over fellow nominees Coco Gauff, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Lionel Messi, Sabrina Ionescu, Simone Biles and Stephen Curry. It was certainly a star-studded list of nominees, and Kelce did not feel like he even belonged on the list, much less to win the award.
During an appearance on his “New Heights” podcast with his brother Jason Kelce last month, Kelce called it “[freaking] nonsense” that he was even nominated for such a prestigious award along with such legendary athletes, indicating that he did not feel like he deserved the nomination.
“What did I do to get Athlete of the Year? I did SNL,” Kelce said of the nomination back in January according to Us Weekly. “How am I on this [list]?”
If he didn’t think that he should even be nominated, he was likely stunned to learn that he actually won the award.
