Ahead of the 2020 NFL season, head coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots ultimately parted ways with legendary quarterback Tom Brady when the two sides could not agree to a contract. But as it turns out, the departure may have been about more than just money.
In an upcoming 10-episode documentary on the Patriots dynasty fittingly titled The Dynasty, Tom Brady made it clear that his reason for leaving the team was more about coaching and not about the money. Brady sent a pretty brutal message to Belichick in the documentary, saying that he “wasn’t going to sign up for more” of the way things were currently going in New England.
“Me and coach Belichick, we did what we loved and competed for 20 years together,” Brady said according to Chad Graff of The Athletic. “But I wasn’t going to sign another contract (in New England) even if I wanted to play until (I was) 50. Based on how things had gone, I wasn’t going to sign up for more of it.”
Obviously, Belichick and Brady had a lot of success together in New England where they won six Super Bowl championships with Belichick coaching Brady. But it seems like they had a pretty major rift they couldn’t mend, leading to Brady’s departure.
