Things obviously did not work out for Sam Darnold with the New York Jets after the team selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but it’s pretty clear that he had high aspirations with the Jets.
This week, Sam Darnold will get to experience the Super Bowl for the first time as a backup quarterback with the San Francisco 49ers. But San Francisco is not exactly where Darnold saw himself making his first deep playoff run with a team as Darnold had a pretty clear message to the Jets about what he expected from his time with the team.
“I always envisioned going deep in the playoffs with New York and being able to make a run at the Super Bowl,” Darnold said according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. “Obviously, that’s what you dream of as a kid. Right when I got drafted by the Jets, and still to this day it’s my goal to be able to bring a championship somewhere. At the same time, you kind of understand what it takes, even in the backup role like I am right now you understand what it takes to actually make it here and actually get it done and not just dream of it and envision it. It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifice.”
Darnold obviously hoped things would go better during his time with the Jets and obviously had higher hopes for his career as a whole, but there is a chance that he could still be able to claim a Super Bowl ring this weekend if the Niners can pull off the victory.
