You can count USC Trojans head coach Lincon Riley among those who think the Florida State Seminoles were unfairly left out of the College Football Playoff this year.
During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Lincoln Riley was discussing the potential impacts of the expanded College Football Playoff, including the possibility that teams could start resting players once they know they are guaranteed a playoff spot. This also led Riley to conclude that the expanded playoff is a good thing because no undefeated team will ever be left out again.
He also called out this year’s selection committee, saying that an undefeated Power Five team getting left out “should never happen anywhere ever”
“I know there’s a bye and all that but like that’s something in college football that nobody’s ever even heard of,” Riley said on the show according to On3. “That actually could happen now, which is interesting, because you could potentially play three more games and so it’s a good thing though, man … Like what happened to Florida State this year, that should never happen anywhere ever. And so I’m really, really glad that that piece is going to be fixed.”
The good news, as Riley points out, is that with an expanded playoff field, it will never happen again.
