Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers was hit with a costly penalty after a big play in the AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs when he was flagged for taunting following a long reception. And it sounds like the penalty cost him more than just 15 yards.
The play in question occurred late in the third quarter the Ravens were attempting to mount a comeback against the Chiefs. Zay Flowers had just hauled in a 54-yard pass from Lamar Jackson that set the team up in the red zone. But following the tackle from Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, Flowers pushed Sneed back into the ground, flicked the ball at him, and stood over him to celebrate the play. As a result, he was hit with a taunting flag.
The penalty backed the Ravens up out of the red zone and killed a lot of momentum from the big play. And on Saturday, the NFL announced that in addition to the costly penalty that played a role in the Ravens losing the game, Flowers was hit with a $10,927 fine for the penalty.
It’s certainly not great for Flowers to have caused a penalty that was costly to both his team and his bank account.
