The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the best defenses in the entire NFL throughout the entire season, but they have a new challenge this week as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. And it sounds like defensive coordinator Steve Wilks understands just how much of a challenge defending Mahomes can be.
During a press conference this week, Wilks had a pretty clear message for Patrick Mahomes about just how dangerous he can be, saying that Mahomes is the best he’s ever seen at buying time in the pocket and still making plays downfield.
“It’s different things that we have to do,” Wilks said during his press conference this week according to Pro Football Talk. “Number one, [Mahomes is] doing a tremendous job, really extended plays. We talked all week. It’s two plays within one down. When the ball snaps and then once he starts to scramble. So he’s phenomenal. The best I’ve ever seen for just buying time, winning with his feet and getting the ball where it needs to go down the field.”
We’ll have to see whether or not the Niners will be able to slow down Mahomes and the Chiefs next week.
