After leading the Michigan Wolverines to their first-ever College Football Playoff national championship earlier this month, Jim Harbaugh ultimately decided to leave the program and return to the NFL in pursuit of a Lombardi Trophy with the Los Angeles Chargers. And it sounds like he’s going to be heavily compensated for the move.
According to a report from NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Los Angeles Chargers are giving Jim Harbaugh a salary that nearly doubles the salary he was previously making at Michigan and makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the entire league.
“Per multiple sources, it’s believed the former Michigan coach will receive an average salary of $16 million per year from his new team,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk on Wednesday night.
“Harbaugh’s deal, based on prior reports, covers five years. If it’s all guaranteed, that’s an $80 million commitment.”
Obviously, this is an absolutely massive financial commitment to their new head coach, and it’s a sign that the organization truly is dedicated to leading their franchise to success.
We’ll have to see whether or not Harbaugh proves to be the right man for the job and worth the hefty price tag he commanded to get him in Los Angeles.
