After missing the NCAA Tournament with a 16-19 season record last year, the Ohio State Buckeyes are in the midst of an extremely disappointing stretch, losing five of their last six games and are currently riding a 14-game road losing streak. But it sounds like the school isn’t going to rush to make any head coaching changes.
During an interview with Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch on Sunday, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith made it clear that he has decided to wait and see what happens the rest of the season before jumping to conclusions about head coach Chris Holtmann.
“We have a lot of this season left to play, and we have coaches and players that are focused on winning every day,” Smith told The Dispatch. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out.”
Holtmann is in his seventh season as Ohio State’s head coach but has yet to lead the program to a conference title, finishing fifth or lower in four of the past five seasons. He also has yet to lead the Buckeyes past the second round of the NCAA Tournament, missing the tournament entirely last season.
We’ll have to see if he can get things turned around at Ohio State.
