Last week, the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – was flooded with fake, AI-generated sexually explicit images of global pop superstar Taylor Swift, many of which were related to her newfound Kansas City Chiefs fandom and her relationship with tight end Travis Kelce. And it sounds like Joe Biden and the White House want to put a stop to it.
During a press conference this week, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Joe Biden and the White House support legislation to address the fake, abusive images and also think that social media platforms need to do a better job of policing what is allowed on their respective platforms.
“It is alarming,” Jean-Pierre told reporters according to Bloomberg. “So while social media companies make their own independent decisions about content management, we believe they have an important role to play in enforcing their own rules to prevent the spread of misinformation and non-consensual intimate imagery.”
For what it’s worth, X did eventually start removing the explicit images that were posted on the platform and even made it impossible to search for terms that might yield those sorts of results, such as “Taylor Swift AI” or temporarily restricting searches on “Taylor Swift.”
