New Ohio State University President Ted Carter officially began his new job on Monday when the school began classes for the spring semester. And it didn’t take long for him to confirm that Ryan Day would remain the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes going forward.

Ryan Day has taken a lot of criticism in recent weeks for his three consecutive losses to the Michigan Wolverines as well as the recent loss to the Missouri Tigers in the Cotton Bowl where his team put up just three points.

Though Carter emphasized the importance of beating Michigan and competing for both Big Ten and national championships every season and acknowledged that Ohio State didn’t do that this year, he also made it clear that Day’s job is safe.

“First, I have a great respect for the biggest rivalries that exist in the country,” Carter said according to Nathan Baird of Cleveland.com. “For someone that ran the Naval Academy, the Army-Navy game was second to the Ohio State Michigan rivalry. I think Ryan Day would also say our goals are to win the Big Ten and win the national championship every year. We didn’t meet that.

“But Ryan Day runs a fantastic program. He’s our coach. I’m proud that he’s our coach and he’ll continue to be our coach.”

While Day’s job will be safe this year, it’s clear that Ohio State expects more from their program than what Day and his team provided this year.
