Like so many other Republican candidates for President, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) is focused on blocking transgender girls and women from competing against other women in sports as part of his big plans.
Scott unveiled a new education and technology plan this week to “defend America’s children, empower parents, and protect kids online” with the hopes that it will help him with voters heading toward the 2024 presidential election.
“Teachers’ unions, Big Tech, and Joe Biden are on a mission to make parents less important,” Scott said in a release. “I have a bold agenda to support and empower parents — from the classroom to the locker room to the smartphone. We must empower parents and give them a choice, so that every child has a chance.”
Scott’s agenda includes a 12-point plan called the “parent’s bill of rights.” As part of that, Scott includes one line about how he wants to prevent transgender girls and women from competing against other girls and women in athletic events, a culture war cornerstone for Republicans in this election cycle.
“Restore American childhood and let girls and boys be girls and boys, not guinea pigs,” Scott’s plan reads. “Save Title IX and women’s sports — if God made you a man, you play sports against other men.”
Critics have noted that Republicans’ ardent support for women’s sports seems to be at odds with past decisions and lack of interest in defending Title IX. There has also been plenty of research about how transgender women don’t have many of the advantages they are perceived to have, especially in certain sports.
