Transgender women’s cyclist Veronica Ivy was the first transgender woman to win a world track cycling championship. But after with the new Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) policy prohibiting any transgender cyclist from competing in women’s events if they “transitioned after (male) puberty,” she will no longer be able to compete against other women – and she’s not happy about it.
During a recent post on Instagram, Veronica Ivy absolutely blasted the UCI, calling the new policy “nonsense.”
“I am registered and my UCI license says Female on it. I registered for the women’s sprint event. I paid my fee,” Ivy said in the post. “However, now I’m forced into the humiliating ‘Men’s/Open’ category. No cis woman will be in this category, only trans women and CIS men. That means it’s not ‘open.'”
Ivy claimed that the new policy indicates that UCI does not believe trans women are real women.
“The UCI has said loud and clear that trans women are not real women and that we must be treated as other, and the cis women must be ‘protected’ from us innocent trans women.”
Ivy finished her statement with some harsh words about the policy.
“It’s an indignity. It’s inhumane. It’s disgusting,” Ivy said. “I will not be deterred by this hateful targeted transphobic policy.”
