Cincinnati’s Edinson Volquez called out his teammates after giving up seven runs against the Cleveland Indians in just 2 2/3 innings on Sunday which, eventually led to him being sent down to the minors.
Volquez said, via John Fay on the Reds Blog at Cincinnati.com:
“Everybody has to step up, start to score some runs. In the last five games, how many runs have we scored? Like 13? That’s not the way we were playing last year. We’re better than that.”
Not surprisingly, on Monday, the team optioned Volquez to Class AAA Louisville. Volquez has struggled this season with a record of 3-2 and an ERA of 6.35. The Reds are currently second in runs scored in the National League behind the St. Louis Cardinals.
