Tyler Farrar owes someone a beer, or 50. The American cyclist was forced to accept a fan’s offer of his bike and shoes in order to complete the third stage of the Tour Down Under. And no, it wasn’t an old 1990 Schwinn. It was a $6,000 racing bike.
A violent crash on his way to Campbelltown, Australia, left Farrar in need of assistance or he would be disqualified for not finishing the stage. As noted by Cycling Weekly, this type of assistance is a violation of rules but an exception was made.
“Without his help, I would’ve travelled all the way to Australia for only two and a half days of racing,” Farrar told Het Nieuwsblad. “This shows how friendly the people are here in Australia. We will give him a full kit to say thanks, and if we don’t have a spare kit, I’ll give him one of mine.”
