SCP Auctions is currently in the midst of its Mid-Summer Classic auction lot. While there is a ton of sports memorabilia on display, none of the lots may have as a hilarious a story as this pair of Air Jordan XVIIIs that were worn by Michael Jordan himself.
The story behind this pair is classic Jordan. MJ wore this particular pair of XVIIIs on February 1, 2003 – back when His Airness came out of retirement a second time to play with the Washington Wizards. On that day, Jordan scored 45 points against the New Orleans Hornets and the Wizards went on to win the contest 109-104.
During the game, Stacey Augmon was largely tasked with “guarding” Jordan as the nearly 40 year old MJ drained bucket after bucket on Stacey and his team. Adding insult to injury, Jordan gifted the very shoes that he used to torch the Hornets to Stacey following the game.
Now, this rather amusing piece of history is being put up for auction, “sourced directly from former Hornets wing, Stacey Augmon.” As of this writing, the sneakers have one bid for $2,500.
