The United States Supreme Court made a landmark decision on Friday, ruling that same-sex marriage is a right. The 5-4 vote marked the culmination of years of legal decisions and powerful pushes by human rights groups and will dramatically alter the lives of hundreds of thousands Americans.
The celebratory ruling was written by Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who said that gay and lesbian couples have a right to marriage, including the following in his majority opinion:
No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.
The ruling was met with both positive and negative reactions, but because this is a fantastic day for American citizens, we’re only focusing on the happy reactions, many of which came from current and former athletes:
