The plans for the $1.7 billion proposal were shown to the NFL league office in New York this week and while the idea of divisional rivals sharing the same stadium seems slightly off-putting, the stadium’s design features one really awesome element that could pay homage to both teams, depending on who is occupying the stadium.

The proposed design includes a 120 feet tall tower that could either shoot lightning or house a flame depending on whether the Chargers or Raiders would be playing a home game at the stadium. Yes, if approved, an NFL stadium could literally fire lightning into the air.

A signature element of the design is a 115- to 120-foot tower that rises through and extends above the main concourse. It would serve as a pedestal for a cauldron that would change depending on the team. When the Chargers play, simulated lightning bolts would swirl behind glass encasing the tower and, if the team were to score a touchdown, a bolt would shoot out of the top. For Raiders games, a flame would burn in the cauldron in honor of legendary team owner Al Davis.

The Carson City Council approved the stadium on Tuesday. However, there is another plan backed by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke that is in the mix as well. That one, as far as I can tell, does not have any lightning-shooting capabilities and is therefore the inferior stadium design.
