After we thought the coloring of playing surfaces was going out of style a few years ago, the phenomenon continues to sweep college athletics. As programs continue to paint their football fields and basketball courts with crazy designs or unconventional colors, there are some intriguing final products but also some hideously terrible decisions. You can add Oakland University’s basketball program to the latter group after they elected to paint their court black to resemble an old school blacktop playing surface. Sounds like an amusing idea but not one that should be actually done, right?
It resembles nothing like a blacktop, as the black is not dark enough to cover up the wood grain. Luckily, the boundary and three-point lines are only blue because of the painter’s tape and will be painted white, thus allowing the players and officials to pick them up quickly during a fast-moving game.
But hopefully they don’t play any teams with black or very dark away uniforms.
