Despite a fantastic 32-2 regular season, including 3-0 in winning the Big East Tournament, Villanova departed the NCAA Tournament in complete disappointment. The Wildcats, the No. 1 seed in the East Region, bowed out in the Third Round on Saturday to 8th-seeded North Carolina State, ensuring Jay Wright’s team would fail to reach the Sweet 16 for the sixth straight season.
The loss capped Wright’s 14th season as head coach of the Wildcats, a run that includes 10 tourney appearances, four Sweet 16s, two Elite Eights and one Final Four. Although he is still chasing the program’s first natty title since 1985, it’s safe to say that Wright has been around the block a few times and is probably fully aware of how March Madness works. But just in case he needed a brief history lesson and mild lecture on constructing a successful tourney team, he has Mike Francesa here to help.
