Tom Brady is known to most people as a four-time Super Bowl champion and arguably the greatest quarterback of all time. But to students at Junipero Serra High School (San Mateo) in the mid-1990s, he was just a goofy two-sport super athlete who also worked on the school newspaper. One of his newspaper mates was Bryan Bishop, co-host of the Adam Carolla Show. Bishop has mentioned in the past that he attended Junipero with Brady (Barry Bonds and Lynn Swann are also noted alums), but it’s rarely a topic of conversation. On Tuesday’s show, a caller asked him to verify if it was true. Bishop obliged:
He’s a year older than I am. It’s a small school. Our graduating class was, like, 160 kids. I knew him kinda well, as much as you can know a guy who’s a year older.
Tom and I were on the newspaper together, and he was a really good baseball player in addition to being a good football player, and I kept the book, the stats, for the baseball team. While he was playing varsity, I was keeping that stats, so we knew each other kinda well. Not, like, good friends, but he knew who I was and I knew who he was.
Then, unprompted, Bishop told the tale of a time that Brady eschewed all decorum in the baseball dugout, ruining perhaps the greatest moment of his teammate’s high school pitching career:
Here’s a funny story about Tom playing baseball…We had a really good pitcher when I was a sophomore, Tom was a junior, and this guy, Matt Shockowitz (sp?), was a senior. Matt Schockowitz was big, hard-throwing left hander. We called him “Shock”. So, Shock’s throwing a hell of a game early on in the season, and it’s an away game, and we’re getting into the later innings and he’s throwing a no-hitter.
I’m keeping the book, and a couple guys are looking at the book, and they all know what’s going on. They just kind of look and they nod and walk away. No hits for the other team. Shock’s throwing a gem. Eighth inning, Tom Brady comes in, catcher’s gear on…He looks at the book, and yells out “HEY, SHOCK’S THROWIN’ A NO-HITTER!”
The. Next. Batter. Single to center field. Broke up the no-hitter. But that was Tom. Just a goofy guy with no compunction.
Bishop swears it wasn’t intentional, and that it was just Brady being his typical goofy self.
