According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, the 49ers will fire head coach Jim Harbaugh within a couple days of the season’s end.
FOX Sports 1 Insider Jay Glazer reports that the 49ers and head coach Jim Harbaugh are expected to cut ties within 24-48 hours after the regular season ends.
Michigan has reached out to 49ers about Harbaugh, and Bears could also show interest if Harbaugh decides to stay in league, Glazer reports. Michigan has reportedly offered Harbaugh a six-year deal in the $48 million range.
Although rumors of a Harbaugh-49ers split have been around since the offseason (when there were reports of trade talks between the Browns and Niners for Harbaugh), it is striking how fast this reported turnaround has been. Harbaugh took the 49ers to three straight NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl in his brief tenure as San Francisco’s head coach. While the Niners have struggled this season (this will be the first non-winning season in Harbaugh’s NFL coaching career), they were also without three of their best players (NaVorro Bowman, Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith) for significant amounts of time.
As far as results, Jim Harbaugh has gotten them for San Francisco. Harbaugh sports a 43-19-1 regular season record as the 49ers head coach. He’s 5-3 in the postseason.
Harbaugh has one year left on his contract, so if he is dumped after the season, the 49ers will either have to find a trade partner for him or they’ll have to fire him.
