New York Jets quarterback has experienced many of the growing pains that young signal-callers do in the NFL. Over his first two seasons, the former West Virginia star has posted a 67.1 QB Rating and boasts a horrendous 1:2 TD to turnover ratio with 20 passing touchdown, 33 interceptions and seven lost fumbles. Although Smith has made a handful of good plays over 27 combined games, he has been a very ineffective and unspectacular quarterback for a very ineffective and unspectacular Jets team.
However, those poor performances do not appear to have affected the young player’s confidence and while it is admirable that he hasn’t lost his faith in his ability to win in the NFL, the following quote is a bit baffling (via NewsDay):
I’ve shown flashes of being a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback.
Technically speaking, yes he has shown a couple flashes of being a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback but so have almost every single one of the other 1,500-plus active players in the league. He continued:
But what we’re looking for here is consistency. The best teams have consistent quarterback play and I realize that and that’s truly what I want to show to the fans and everyone outside the building.
Again, the confidence and drive is commendable but this will only provide additional firepower for the relentless and unforgiving critics in New York that seem to eventually penetrate most personalities in that city.
