The Detroit Lions are in the middle of a one-score game against the Arizona Cardinals. In the fourth quarter, it appeared the Cardinals were going to pin the Lions deep in their own territory. But while the Cardinals were downing the punt, the Lions’ Jeremy Ross wisely picked up the football and returned it 49 yards. The Lions were in business.
Bruce Arians challenged the play, hoping for a reversal. And referee Jerome Boger complied, ruling that the player who first touched the football had possession of the ball, which of course meant the ball was brought all the way back to the one-yard line. Hmmmm.
