Not many average college football fans can tell you which schools David Cutcliffe (Duke) and Paul Johnson (Georgia Tech) lead, but the two ACC coaches are certainly generating a little national heat in advance of their game this week.
The two started an amusing beef earlier this week when Cutcliffe said the Yellow Jackets have difficulty recruiting “high-end players”, particularly referencing wide receivers. While there didn’t appear to be serious animosity behind the remarks, they certainly weren’t necessary (or completely justified, as Georgia Tech boasts two of the best WRs in the NFL with Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas – although neither were recruited by Johnson) and they definitely pissed off GT head coach Paul Johnson, who fired back with the following on Wednesday:
How many receivers have they put in the NFL? I can tell you. None. They’ve had one offensive player (drafted by) the NFL in his six years there. He probably ought to worry about his own business.
Although Georgia Tech is enjoying a nice start to 2014 with a 5-0 record and No. 22 ranking in the AP poll, this ACC matchup was of little national interest, that is until the two level-headed coaches started bantering back and forth.
