Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell was forced out in the third quarter of their loss to the Denver Broncos for what was determined to be a sprained MCL. The injury came on a very, very questionable decision by Broncos tight end Julius Thomas.
As Campbell was ready to engage offensive tackle Ryan Clady, Thomas dove at his right knee for an unforgiving chop block and now Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians is pissed, offering the following postgame comments:
I’ve been coaching 37 years, it’s the dirtiest play I’ve ever seen in the National Football League. It was a flat chop block and it put him out of the game. I’ve never seen anything like it.
They’ll fine the guy, but what do we get? We lost our guy. Somebody has got to answer to that. A fine isn’t going to do it when he’s going to miss three to four weeks.
According to the NFL’s fine structure, Thomas will likely receive a $8,268 slap on the wrist, which is the amount designated for a first chop block offense.
Arizona veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was among many others that were fuming about the injury:
