One of the most amusing rumors born out of Derek Jeter’s long career was that the Yankees shortstop had a penchant for giving gift baskets to women after one night stands.
“Derek has girls stay with him at his apartment in New York, and then he gets them a car to take them home the next day. Waiting in his car is a gift basket containing signed Jeter memorabilia, usually a signed baseball,” the friend dished.
Amazingly, after letting the tale foster for years, Jeter actually addressed the “gift basket” rumor in an interview with New York. Unfortunately, but not unsurprisingly given that Derek Jeter has to be the most boring sports superstar in the world, Jeter denied it:
“Like I’m giving [women] signed baseballs and pictures of myself on the way out! Who comes up with a story like that?” Jeter said. “It said the reason people found out was because I gave the same girl the same basket and I had forgotten I’d given her one—like there are so many people coming through I forgot!”
Yes, it seems that Derek Jeter is as straight-laced and colorless as his public persona suggests. Seriously, the fact that Jeter has managed to craft an image that is this popular and this lacking in any actual personality is some sort of Nike and MLB-approved miracle.
