Turns out, Josh Gordon might’ve been screwed over by the NFL. (Shocking, I know.) As his appeal date approaches — Gordon will appeal the decision on Friday — details have emerged regarding the NFL’s drug testing procedure.
According to Pro Football Talk, Gordon is required to pass 10 drug tests per month. Gordon has passed at least 70 drug tests, according to PFT’s source.
This is the process of testing for drugs, as said by Mike Florio on PFT:
Urine samples routinely are split into two bottles, the “A” bottle and the “B” bottle. If the “A” bottle generates a positive result, the “B” bottle is tested. Amazingly, the “B” bottle doesn’t have to independently show a violation. Instead, the substance abuse policy states that the “‘B’ bottle Test need only show that the substance, revealed in the ‘A’ bottle Test, is evident to the ‘limits of detection’ to confirm the results of the ‘A’ bottle Test.”
Here comes the bad part. Bottle A for Gordon tested just one (1!) nanogram per milliliter above the current limit. Bottle B, on the other hand, was 1.4 nanogram per milliliters less than the limit. But, because Bottle A was labeled Bottle A and was therefore tested first, Gordon tested positive. If Bottle B had been labeled Bottle A, Gordon would have tested negative and would be taking part in training camp with the Browns as we speak.
Here’s hoping Gordon wins his appeal on Friday.
