Marking the 20th anniversary for the release of Illmatic, Nas performed the entire album (plus a few extras) at Coachella. Former foe and current ally, Mr. Shawn Carter, made a guest appearance to perform “Dead Presidents” and “Where I’m From” for the lucky folks in attendance.
1994 was a landmark year in hip hop; arguably the greatest year of its existence. Illmatic. Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Ready To Die. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. Resurrection. Regulate… The G Funk Era. Six of the most perfect albums the genre has ever heard. Other ’94 notables: Scarface – The Diary, Gang Star – Hard to Earn, Beastie Boys – Ill Communication, Method Man – Tical, Redman – Dare Iz A Darkside, The Coup – Genocide & Juice, UGK – Super Tight…, Thug Life (2Pac) – Volume 1, The Beatnuts – The Beatnuts, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth – The Main Ingredient. Seriously, this list goes on and on.
In addition to his Coachella performance, the trailer for “Time Is Illmatic” dropped on the interwebs. The documentary will kickoff this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is a must-see for any hip hop head or fan of music and culture.
