Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 34th goal of the season against the Penguins on Wednesday night, but it didn’t come easy. During a 4-on-4 stretch halfway through the third period, Ovechkin had his stick slashed out of his hands in the offensive zone by Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik.
Ovechkin couldn’t believe there was no call on Orpik but quickly recovered his stick and resumed play, taking a pass from a teammate and one-timing it into the net to give the Caps a 3-2 lead.
Silly Orpik, it’s going to take a lot more than a petty little slash to keep OV out of the back of the net.
Unfortunately for Ovechkin and the Caps, they couldn’t hold onto the lead and lost 4-3 in a barnburner.
