Currently, the world of professional golf is greatly divided after Saudi-backed LIV Golf began a little over two years ago and began poaching some of golf’s biggest stars from the PGA Tour. Ever since, there has been a rivalry between the two leagues and the top players in the world haven’t regularly been competing against each other given the separation between the two leagues. Rory McIlroy doesn’t think that’s sustainable.
Rory McIlroy had long been one of the harshest critics of LIV Golf and wanted no part of a potential union between the two leagues. But during an interview this week, McIlroy admitted the harsh truth that the PGA Tour needs an alliance with LIV Golf.
“There needs to be a correction. I think what’s happening is not sustainable right now, so something needs to happen to try to bring it all back together so we can all move forward so we don’t have this division that’s sort of ongoing,” McIlroy said.
“They keep going down those different paths and I just don’t see how that benefits anyone in the long run. … I think [it’s] a shame for the overall game of golf.”
We’ll have to see when or if that alliance ever happens.
