Earlier this week, news broke that the Kansas City Chiefs were expected to sign veteran quarterback and former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz to serve as the backup quarterback to starter Patrick Mahomes. And on Thursday, the team made that move official.
On Thursday afternoon, the team officially announced that they had signed Carson Wentz to a contract.
“Bringing this vet QB to KC,” the Chiefs official account said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, Wentz is not expected to be the team’s starting quarterback as the Mahomes has that position locked down, but the news still led to a lot of reactions on social media as a result.

Wentz was selected as the No. 2 overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2016 NFL Draft and appeared to have a bright career ahead of him, even earning Pro Bowl honors during the 2017 season. However, Wentz was ultimately benched by the team during the 2020 season and traded to the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the 2021 season.
Wentz started every game for the Colts in 2021 before joining the Washington Commanders in 2022, where he started seven games before he was benched. Wentz then served as a backup quarterback to Matthew Stafford last season with the Los Angeles Rams.
