Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is heading into the final season of his contract. And even though the Cowboys have said they would like to sign him to a contract extension, it seems like that isn’t going to happen this offseason. That likely means that the Cowboys will have a new quarterback for the 2025 season.
On Tuesday, league insider Ian Rapoport reported that there was “no indication a deal is coming” between Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys, which would mean that Prescott is headed toward becoming a free agent next offseason, especially considering he has a no-tag clause in his current contract.
“The #Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year. Owner Jerry Jones said, ‘We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.’ No indication a deal is coming,” Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Of course, the Cowboys could always sign Prescott to a new deal next offseason after he plays out his current contract, but if the team has been unable to negotiate a new contract for him this offseason it doesn’t seem likely anything would change in that regard next offseason either.
So it seems like the Cowboys are headed toward having a new starting quarterback for the first time since Prescott took over as the starter during the 2016 NFL season.
