The Denver Broncos were not in attendance for the Michigan Wolverines’ pro day last week, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have the chance to evaluate star quarterback J.J. McCarthy in person ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.

During a recent interview with Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post, Sean Payton revealed that he met with J.J. McCarthy personally the day after Michigan’s Pro Day and “made him throw all over again.”

And it sounds like the Broncos spent quite a while with McCarthy that day.

“We went him a bunch of information, spent four or five hours with him, and made him throw all over again,” Payton said according to Gabriel. “It’s all part of the process and it can help lead to a more efficient and more effective position.”

Obviously, the Broncos currently hold the No. 12 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, which will likely be too late to have a chance to select McCarthy. However, Payton did not rule out the possibility of trading up in the draft to select a quarterback.

The team is obviously in need of a new quarterback after parting ways with Russell Wilson earlier this month. We’ll have to see whether or not McCarthy turns out to be that guy.
