The San Francisco 49ers already have a starting quarterback after Brock Purdy managed to put up MVP-caliber numbers and lead the team to the Super Bowl in just his first full season as a starter in the league. But it sounds like the team is still bringing in another quarterback to add some depth behind him.

According to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers have reached a deal with veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs to bring him in to serve as a backup for Brock Purdy.

“The #49ers are signing QB Josh Dobbs to a one-year deal that includes $2.25M fully guaranteed with $750K in playtime incentives, per source,” Pelissero said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

While Dobbs is not expected to be the starter over Purdy, his signing still generated quite a buzz on social media.

Dobbs will obviously not be the starting quarterback for the team this upcoming season, but he has extensive experience as a starter, starting 12 games for the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings last season.

So if the team ever needs to turn to Dobbs next season to fill in for Purdy in the case of an injury or something else, he’s experienced and prepared.
