The Ohio State Buckeyes decided to part ways with special teams coordinator Parker Fleming this offseason after Ohio State struggled on special teams each of the past two seasons under Fleming. As head coach Ryan Day tries to fix those struggles this season, it sounds like he got some pretty significant advice from legendary Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel.
During his press conference on Tuesday, Ryan Day revealed that Jim Tressel gave him an idea of how to approach special teams without having a full-time special teams coordinator.
“I made a bunch of calls to a bunch of coaches and one in particular that hit with me was when I talked to Coach Tressel,” Day said according to The Spun
“He shared with me that he did this when he was here, he assigned one of the special teams to each of the coaches. And it got great buy-in from the players because, as a player, you want to really impress your position coach.”
Day also made it clear that he plans to have a hand in coaching Ohio State’s special teams too, and overseeing his other coaches.
“I’m gonna be very much involved with that,” Day said.
We’ll have to see how Tressel’s plan works out for Day.
