The Dallas Cowboys have made it pretty clear that they intend to sign Dak Prescott to a new contract. That hasn’t happened yet, and the team did make a decision that seems to hint at their future plans – and help them immediately, as well.
According to a report from Field Yates of ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys have restructured the contract of Dak Prescott in a way that frees up $4 million in salary cap space for this season, and also extends the void years through the 2028 season.
“The Cowboys converted a $5M roster bonus due to QB Dak Prescott on Sunday into a signing bonus, creating $4M in salary cap space in 2024. The move reduces Prescott’s salary cap number to $55.455M, while two extra void years were added to the deal for cap purposes (void years now through 2028),” Yates said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

“This does not prevent the team and Prescott from further negotiating a long-term extension, but provides Dallas with immediate salary cap relief.”
The void years mean that even if the team were to decide to part ways with Prescott after the 2024 season, his salary would still count against the cap until 2028. The void years could indicate that the team wants to spread out a cap hit across several years if they do decide to part ways with him.
Regardless, this is a pretty significant move, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.
Without a full-on extension, adds $4 million in dead money to his 2025 cap number. Now roughly $40 million. https://t.co/mPA6RX4lnC

Important point on this is that they couldn’t have added void years without Dak’s permission. So they are working together at least a little bit. Extension still possible. https://t.co/hFo9iE5VAI

The Cowboys doing the smallest of restructures sure is interesting https://t.co/yHuuqXChW0

An extension is definitely not impossible.
But this is interesting to say the least. Everything related to Dak will be (and has been) for the time being. https://t.co/hjDLvq050L

Kicking the can, but the #Cowboys and #DakPrescott are able to make some minor progress https://t.co/oTboAvlEJG

One step closer to Dak Prescott becoming a free agent a year from now.
The cowboys are playing a dangerous game and will soon find out how hard it is to find a franchise QB. https://t.co/xzxLDEi6tg

We’ll have to see what happens with Prescott and the Cowboys in the future.
