The Cleveland Browns have had a hard time keeping Deshaun Watson on the field ever since he signed with the team as the star quarterback has suffered a number of injuries that have kept him sidelined. While they can’t necessarily help those injures, they did the next best thing this week: signed a capable and proven backup.

According to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, Jameis Winston and the Cleveland Browns have agreed to a one-year deal.

“BREAKING: Free agent QB Jameis Winston is close to finalizing a 1-year deal worth up to $8.7M with the #Browns, sources tell @BleacherReport. Winston fielded interest from multiple teams and decided this morning that he’s going to Cleveland, Schultz said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, this is some pretty significant news, especially considering how often the Browns have had to turn to their backup quarterback in recent years, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.

Winston has made it clear that he thinks he is capable of being a starting quarterback in the NFL. But if he’s not going to be a starter, this could be the next best thing.
