Cleveland Browns helmets Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has missed a lot of games throughout his career due to injuries. As a result, it sounds like the Browns are making sure that they have a capable and veteran backup quarterback to lead the team in case he goes down with an injury again.

According to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Cleveland Browns and veteran quarterback Jameis Winston have agreed to a deal that will send him to Cleveland on a one-year contract.

“BREAKING: Free agent QB Jameis Winston is close to finalizing a 1-year deal worth up to $8.7M with the #Browns, sources tell @BleacherReport. Winston fielded interest from multiple teams and decided this morning that he’s going to Cleveland, Schultz said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Winston has not been a full-time starter since the 2019 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has repeatedly made it clear that he thinks he is worthy of being a starting quarterback and wants an opportunity to be a starter in the NFL.

Obviously, Winston will not be the team’s top quarterback with Watson returning, but with 80 games as a starter under his belt, he is a more than capable and veteran backup if the Browns need it.
