Before the overtime period began in Super Bowl LVIII, the San Francisco 49ers won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball first. And based on some recently released video, the Kansas City Chiefs were extremely excited about that decision.

A recently released video from NFL Films shows an up-close look at the coin toss, revealing that the Kansas City Chiefs were planning to kick first in the overtime period while the Niners wanted the ball first.

So when the 49ers ultimately won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball, the Chiefs were elated at that decision on the sideline.

“They want it,” Patrick Mahomes said as he ran toward the sideline after the coin toss. “They want the ball. They wanted it. Hey, they wanted it. They wanted it, baby.”

Mahomes looked somewhat surprised that the Niners decided to receive the ball first. And Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce seemed to feel the same way.

“We want them to have the ball,” Kelce said. “They want it, they can have it.”

Ultimately, this choice from the 49ers proved controversial as it gave the opportunity for the Chiefs to know exactly what they had to do by getting the ball second.

The Chiefs held the Niners to a field goal, then went down and scored a touchdown to win the game.
