Women’s tennis legend Martina Navratilova is arguably the greatest and most accomplished women’s tennis player of all time, and she has recently started to use her platform to speak out against transgender women and girls competing against other women and girls. And this week, she seemed to take aim at transgender swimming star Lia Thomas.

Last week, Martina Navratilova offered a rather scathing review of an article from Forbes that argued “the problem for Thomas and other trans women athletes is not trans bodies but rather the way we gender-segregate sports.” Navratilova said she believes that this article probably “takes the cake” as the most ignorant pieces she’s ever read.

“I have seen some really ignorant pieces before, but I do believe this one takes the cake. The body is the whole [freaking] issue- not the outside but the inside! How one looks is totally irrelevant,” Navratilova said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Thomas is currently pushing back against a decision from World Swimming to ban transgender women from competing in elite women’s competitions like the Olympics. It’s pretty clear that Navratilova does not agree with Thomas competing against other women.
