Toward the end of the season, the Denver Broncos seemed to make it clear that they intended to part ways with quarterback Russell Wilson when they benched him for the final two games of the season in favor of backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham. But it sounds like that decision hasn’t actually been made yet.

In a press conference this week, Sean Payton had a pretty surprising update about the situation, revealing that he told Russell Wilson that a final decision has not yet been made about his future with the team.

“It’s too early,” Payton said in a video shared by Troy Renck of Denver 7. “I spent half an hour with Russ yesterday and I told him ‘Look, I don’t think it’s going to be a long, drawn out process but it hasn’t been decided relative to what our plans are.’”

The team’s decision to bench Wilson initially was due to the $37 million that would be guaranteed to Wilson in 2025 if he suffered a serious injury, and it seemed to indicate that Wilson would not be back with the team next season.

Even though it seems that the team is looking to part ways with Wilson in the offseason, they do technically have some options that they could explore, including restructuring Wilson’s contract.

We’ll certainly have to wait and see what happens this offseason.
